Request a report copy or securely dispute an error
Ask the consumer reporting company that issued your report for a copy or its approved dispute process. A copy request obtains information; a correction request challenges accuracy; an appeal asks the employer or housing provider to reconsider its decision. These are separate requests and may need different recipients.
Identify the issuer and your request
- Use the reporting-company name and contact details on the actual report or adverse-action notice. Do not assume every report was issued by Ethur.
- For a missing copy, state that you want your report and ask how identity will be verified securely. For a suspected error, identify the affected section and explain whether it is a wrong-person record, incorrect disposition, missing update or another specific problem.
- Send decision context or an appeal to the organization making the hiring or rental decision; that organization cannot substitute for the reporting company's accuracy review.
Start without exposing sensitive data
- 1Contact the issuer using verified details. If the issuer or channel is unclear, ask Ethur support for help identifying the correct recipient.
- 2Provide your name, a safe reply contact, the requesting organization and an order/reference number if available. Describe the issue without attaching the report.
- 3Ask for an approved secure submission channel, identity requirements and the information needed for a copy or dispute.
- 4Explain any decision deadline and tell the employer or housing provider that you have requested an accuracy review. Do not assume this automatically pauses its decision.
Prepare evidence for the secure channel
- List the exact entry being challenged and the correction you believe is needed, including source and dates where relevant.
- Gather authoritative evidence relevant to that entry, such as a court disposition or source correction. Ask which documents are accepted before sending them.
- Keep unrelated household members' details and unnecessary medical or financial information out of your submission. Confirm permitted redaction with the recipient.
- Use identity evidence only when requested through the verified secure process; never place SSNs, ID images or full report files in email or Eve.
Follow up and understand the outcome
- 1Keep your submission date, recipient, reference and a non-sensitive description of what you provided.
- 2Follow up in the same thread with that reference; ask whether evidence was received and whether anything else is needed. Do not infer a statutory deadline from a support reply estimate.
- 3Ask how the outcome and any revised report will be provided securely, and whether prior recipients will be notified as applicable.
- 4Review the outcome against the disputed entry. If unresolved, ask the issuer about further dispute options and consult official consumer guidance. A corrected report does not itself reverse a hiring or rental decision.
If you cannot find your report
- A lost invitation, inaccessible account or expired link is an access issue: identify the requesting organization and ask for access assistance rather than creating another screening order.
- If the notice names another reporting company, contact that company rather than sending evidence to an unrelated provider.
- If you received adverse action, check the notice for your dispute and free-report rights; the timing and notice duties depend on the purpose and applicable law.
