Pre-employment drug screening explained
Pre-employment drug screening usually means a urine test on a 5-panel or 10-panel screen at a collection site. Negative results return in one to two business days; non-negatives go to confirmation testing and medical review, adding two to three days.
Panels and methods
| Method | Detection window | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| Urine | Days to ~1 week | Standard pre-employment and DOT |
| Oral fluid | Hours to ~2 days | Recent-use and post-incident testing |
| Hair | Up to ~90 days | Safety-sensitive and executive roles |
Marijuana is the complicated part
A growing number of states and cities restrict employment decisions based on off-duty cannabis use or on a positive test alone. Safety-sensitive and DOT-regulated roles are generally exempt. Testing policy needs to be set jurisdiction by jurisdiction rather than nationally.
- A non-negative result is not a failed test. A medical review officer contacts the candidate first to identify a lawful prescription explanation.
